3.12 SELFISH NEEDS, HOW TO RESPOND -- SELF-HELP TACTICS FOR COPING WITH VERBAL ABUSE== #12. How to cope when the discussion focuses exclusively on what he/she wants, needs. Don't let the other person monopolize the discussion with his/her needs. Keep explaining what you want. Repeat what he/she has said and make sure that he/she understands that you understand; however, point out that your wants and needs are also just as important. Abusers are self centered and selfish . But a relationship in which the abuser's needs get met and yours don't is not a relationship, it is a job. If you cannot get the abuser to see things from your side and to stop being selfish, you must see a counselor. |
