3.08 DISTRACTIONS, HOW TO RESPOND -- SELF-HELP TACTICS FOR COPING WITH VERBAL ABUSE

== #8. How to cope with the other person not sticking to the subject.

Keep talking about the main point and refuse to be distracted by other unrelated things. Don't let the other go off on tangents. This is a key point. It is very easy to bring in past mistakes from weeks, months or years ago but this is only a distraction. It not only muddies the waters, it means the discussion can go on for hours and get completely off the point so that nothing can be accomplished. This is hard to do and tiring if you are the person that keeps bringing the conversation back to the point. Yet keep working at it; it's worth the trouble.
