3.07 ATTEMPTS TO MAKE YOU ANGRY, HOW TO RESPOND -- SELF-HELP TACTICS FOR COPING WITH VERBAL ABUSE

== #7. How to cope with the other person trying to make you angry.

When an abuser tries to push your buttons, don't rise to the bait. Keep your voice low and calm. Don't let the abuser make you angry. When you are mad, you won't be thinking clearly and you can be manipulated more easily.

Anger will confuse you and distract you. It will also take both of you back to an immature level of disagreement. If you find yourself getting angry, say that you are starting to get quite mad and to avoid a blowup, you must leave the room for a while. This tactic is useful if you don't use it to manipulate the other person, but rather to get some breathing space. If the other person stops, stay. However, if the other person does keep pushing your buttons, make good on your assertion and leave the room for a while. When you are calmer, return and continue.
