1.54 RESISTANCE -- PSYCHOLOGY ABUSE TERMS, CONCEPTS

==== Resistance

MEANING: Reluctance or hostility.

When an abused person is trying to make headway with an abuser, there will almost certainly be a lot of resistance on the part of the abuser.

RELEVANCE TO ABUSE: Abusers will resist because they do not want things to change; abusers have a set way of controlling their victims; abusers do not want to give up any power to the other person as abusers want to remain in power. The resistance will be fierce initially and it will require a lot of work to overcome. Abusers often see the world in terms of power. They will see questions by the abused as a threat to their power. Abused people need to assert that they only want a fair shake and that they are not out to take control. This may or may not work, but it is worth a shot.
