1.55 RESPECT -- PSYCHOLOGY ABUSE TERMS, CONCEPTS

==== Respect

MEANING: Valuing and honoring another person including their words and their actions while not having to approve of everything they do.

Respect can often mean admiration or esteem but it does not in this case. It has to do with accepting the other person on an equal basis, giving the other person the same consideration during a discussion, for example, as one would expect for oneself. In a sense, this is a variation of 'Do unto others as you would have others do unto you'.

RELEVANCE TO ABUSE: This concept is critical as abuse is caused by a lack of respect. Abusers do not respect those they abuse. Abusers see themselves as more worthy, as superior or as in charge or in command. Those they abuse do not have the right to ask for an equal hearing with the abuser.

RELATED WORDS AND PHRASES: honor, esteem, regard, admire, favor, consideration, nonjudgmental, critical, dismiss, disrespect
