1.47 PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE -- PSYCHOLOGY ABUSE TERMS, CONCEPTS

==== Passive-Aggressive

MEANING: Originally a military term, it refers to people who appear to comply yet are actually undermining what they seem to be doing. It has been listed as a personality disorder (PD) in its extreme form.

RELEVANCE TO ABUSE: The most difficult abuse is passive-aggressive. It's like chasing shadows. These people will always deny that they meant anything sinister.

PERSONAL NOTE FROM RICK DOBLE: My 1st wife was passive-aggressive. She might say something insulting and then soften it with a broad smile. For example, when I was a freelance photographer, was getting a graduate degree in a photography related field and was also creating my own art photography, she announced in a loud voice at a party that she "hated photographers." She then turned to me and gave me a loving smile and wink like the true meaning was a secret between me and her, even though I had no idea what she meant and was deeply hurt.

RELATED WORDS AND PHRASES: stubbornness, procrastination, inefficiency, double bind, mixed messages
