1.35 LEARNING DISABILITY -- PSYCHOLOGY ABUSE TERMS, CONCEPTS

=== Learning Disability

MEANING: A disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, that may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or to do mathematical calculations. (This definition is from the US Federal Code.)

RELEVANCE TO ABUSE: Some abusers have learning disabilities and have learned to hide them. Abusers are, in a sense, emotionally crippled. A learning disability can be one of the things that is causing the injury. Dealing with the disability might solve some of the abusive problems.

MORE ABOUT LEARNING DISABILITY: Some people may have a learning disability and not realize it. Dyslexia, in which an intelligent person has trouble recognizing letters and words, can go undiagnosed for years, for example. If you or someone you know has trouble learning in certain areas when they otherwise appear to be intelligent, suspect a learning disability and get tested.

RELATED WORDS AND PHRASES: dyslexia, attentional deficit disorder (ADD), hyper activity
