1.48 PERMISSION -- PSYCHOLOGY ABUSE TERMS, CONCEPTS

==== Permission

MEANING: Approval to operate or proceed in a certain psychological manner from a therapist or from a close friend.

RELEVANCE TO ABUSE: To go against an abuser might contradict some long held beliefs and values. For example, most people have a hard time contradicting their parents. However, a counselor might give a person permission to be assertive when dealing with an abusive mother or father.

PERSONAL NOTE FROM RICK DOBLE: We have all been brought up with certain values, constraints and expectations. To change those is difficult especially individually. Permission allows people to do things that they might have been reluctant to do on their own.
