1.38 LISTENING, ACTIVE LISTENING -- PSYCHOLOGY ABUSE TERMS, CONCEPTS=== Listening, Active Listening MEANING: Listening is the most important tool in communication. Many people tune the other person out so that they can be ready to pounce when the other stops talking. Bad idea! Even if you have a severe disagreement with the other person, you need to be clear on what he or she has actually said. 'Active listening' is a skill in which the listener must repeat and understand what was just said before replying. When this person replies, the other must do the same in turn before responding. RELEVANCE TO ABUSE: Abusive people are generally poor listeners. By insisting on 'active listening' the abused can solve a lot of problems in communication. PERSONAL NOTE FROM RICK DOBLE: Listening is critical. Make sure the other person understands what you said. Often they will 'filter' your words into something quite different from what you meant. Double checking that you are both 'on the same page' can solve and prevent a lot of problems.
