1.59 STAGES OF GRIEF AND LOSS -- PSYCHOLOGY ABUSE TERMS, CONCEPTS

==== Stages Of Grief And Loss

MEANING: Losing anything causes a series of emotions that must be experienced or the person will never recover from the loss. The stages of grief are: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. Not everyone will go through all these stages; they may not go through them in the above order; there may be several emotions involved; some people may go through one stage only to return to it later. There is no set pattern except that grief is real, important and must be dealt with.

RELEVANCE TO ABUSE: If an abusive marriage ends, you will still go through all these stages of mourning even though you may be glad to be rid of the relationship. And if you stay in your marriage but your romantic notions about your marriage change, you will have also suffered a loss that will trigger a milder sense of grief.

RELATED WORDS AND PHRASES: bereaved, mourning, mournful, sorrowing, sorrowful, bereft grieving,
