1.17 DEVALUE -- PSYCHOLOGY ABUSE TERMS, CONCEPTS

==== Devalue

MEANING: To lessen the value. Originally an economic term such as "the currency was devalued."

RELEVANCE TO ABUSE: Abusers can control the abused by devaluing what they once valued. The abused will then work to restore the previous value or feel that they have disappointed the abuser. It is simply another way of controlling the abused. What the abuser valued one year may be devalued the next like a child taking a toy away from another child.

PERSONAL NOTE FROM RICK DOBLE: My 1st wife valued me highly for the first three years of our marriage; in fact she valued me too highly, it was not realistic. However, she devalued me during the last four years, taking away and degrading everything she had valued previously.

RELATED WORDS AND PHRASES: lower, remove, lessen, degrade
