1.15 DENIAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL -- PSYCHOLOGY ABUSE TERMS, CONCEPTS

==== Denial

MEANING: Not seeing a problem, refusing to acknowledge that a problem exists.

Psychologists continue to be amazed at how people cannot see things directly in front of their eyes -- like the person who drinks a bottle of whiskey every day, but who denies being an alcoholic. Entire families, communities, cultures can be in denial such as the denial of child sex abuse within a family that has been going on for years.

RELEVANCE TO ABUSE: Both the abuser and the abused may be in denial. Either or both may have trouble seeing the problem for what it is.
