1.02 ACCOUNTABILITY, RESPONSIBILITY -- PSYCHOLOGY ABUSE TERMS, CONCEPTS==== Accountability, Responsibility MEANING: Accountability: A standard of responsibility that an individual is held to when they promise or assert something. If a person fails to do as promised, he or she must accept responsibility and do what is necessary to make amends. Responsibility: A more general term such as a person is responsible for his actions. Accountability often refers to specifics such as actual promises made. This term is used within corporations and organizations but it also applies to individuals. An abuser who makes promises and then fails should be held accountable, for example. RELEVANCE TO ABUSE: Abusive people tend to evade responsibility. They often find excuses. Accountability is a way of pinning them down to a standard, i.e. the person made a promise or agreed to a change in behavior. Later it can be judged whether they did as agreed or did not.
