1.18 SEXUAL ABUSE, SEX ABUSE -- TYPES AND CATEGORIES OF ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR==== Sexual Abuse, Sex Abuse MEANING: Forced sex or sex that takes unfair advantage of the abuser's power such as a father who abuses a daughter or a priest who abuses an altar boy. It is not considered sex between 'consenting adults' as the abused person is often a minor or is in a vulnerable position as a student who is coerced into having sex with a teacher or an employee who is pressured into having sex with his or her boss. MORE ABOUT SEXUAL ABUSE: Any kind of inappropriate touching of a younger person by an older person is abusive. Young people may feel uncomfortable but not know why. Such touching may introduce them into areas they are not ready for. Since younger people do not have highly developed standards or have not set their boundaries or personal space when it comes to sex, they are being exploited by an older person. Sexual abuse should also include inappropriate discussions of sex and looking at pornography. PERSONAL NOTE FROM RICK DOBLE: Sexual abuse has been around for a long time but only recognized recently as a deep seated problem that has been ignored. I believe that society have been guilty of a collective denial because no one wanted to deal with the inevitable problems once they admitted the behavior was happening. It has been occurring in families, in schools, in churches and in youth groups for centuries, I believe.
