1.01 BATTERED WOMEN, BATTERED WIFE -- TYPES AND CATEGORIES OF ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR

==== Battered Women, Battered Wife

MEANING: Husbands behaving violently and abusively toward their wives.

While the phrase 'battered women' relates primarily to physical abuse, other abuse is almost certainly present such as emotional, verbal and sexual.

PERSONAL NOTE FROM RICK DOBLE: Women often put up with abuse just to keep things together, especially if children are involved. Many women have the idea of 'super woman' or 'super mom' which means that they can endure just about any abuse and keep on going. But this is not a good way to live. While people might have to endure the hardships of life, enduring abuse does not have to be part. Women may also find that their self-esteem is destroyed in an abusive relationship. Even after leaving, it may take years to recover a good sense of oneself. This is always a personal decision: money, children, family, grandparents, extended family, work and commitment may all be involved.
